As though dragged by this star, the gaping boy drifts forward. He sometimes steps sideways but does not completely avoid first a tree stump and later a clinging rosebush.
The time is late August 1960, the object of attention is the Echo 1 satellite, and the boy is me, age 5. Not many nights later I saw the satellite again while at the Callao Harvest Fiesta. A horse pull advanced under two strings of bare lights at the city park near the railroad. As a team pulled, men stepped from their places along the dusty track onto the sled, eventually halting the sled. Despite the distractions, I looked up frequently. There it was! The satellite slid silently east till blocked by Peyton’s grocery. I had a sense of standing at the beginning of something big.
There’s a verse from Ecclesiastes 3 that Dwaine often quotes.
“God has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet it is so big that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”
Like me, some people begin to come to God via a yearning for something beyond, something bigger, deeper, higher. As I meet these people, I know that God has already begun the inside work. Several years passed before I met the God who truly satisfies.
I’d like to know... what situation revealed eternity in your heart? What was the beginning of your beginning in Christ? Do you have the sense of standing on the edge of something big?
